Almanac of Story Tellers: Frank Lloyd Wright

Every day brings a new story.  And each day contributes to story telling -- in prose and in poetry, in art and in music, on the stage, on the screen, and, of course, in books

Today is the story of June 8th
 ___________________________________________________________________________

It is the 159th day of the year, leaving 206 days remaining in 2022.

On this date in 1867, the architect Frank Lloyd Wright was born.

He told his stories through the buildings he designed, showing made-made structures could exist within their environment, and how they could harmonize with their inhabitants.

He believed a building's structure and space should create and convey cultural values.

Over their years, he become best known for the Prairie Style of housing he helped develop and enhance. An extension of the Arts & Crafts Style, it emphasized blending into its environment, comfort, convenience, and spaciousness, all while eschewing strict compartmentalization.

Wright is often thought of as America's greatest architect. Several of the more than 1,000  buildings he designed have been designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Two of his buildings show his genius:

Fallingwater, in the Alleghany Mountains in Western Pennsylvania: Originally built as a weekend retreat, it was cantilevered over a waterfall. The purpose was not to consign the water to a mere viewing pleasure, but to bring its sound and presence into the family's life. It is now a museum.

The Guggenheim Museum in New York: Built without separate floors, but with its levels connected by a winding spiral ramp, it showed his idea that a building should be one continuous space.
